What is hospice care?

Hospice care is provided by an inter-disciplinary team led by a board-certified physician to patients with a terminal illness and focuses on palliation of symptoms as opposed to a curative approach. At Ultimate Caring we work closely with not just the patients, but their loved ones to create goals that focus on how to best enhance the quality of life at the end of life. Our team’s priority is to meet the patient’s physical, emotional and spiritual needs and actively involve the family in the decision making. While hospice may still be deemed societally as a scary word many of our families will attest to the fact that it truly felt like a gift to have the support of professionals through such a difficult time.

When is hospice appropriate?

Hospice patients are deemed eligible when a physician determines that the patient has 6 months or less to live, is rapidly declining in spite of aggressive treatment or the patient chooses to stop treatments for a terminal illness that may prolong life but decrease its quality. Hospice care, as is commonly perceived, is not just for cancer patients but includes patients with a diagnosis of Alzheimer's, dementia, cerebrovascular accident (stroke), lung disease, heart disease and kidney disease in advanced stages.

Some of the services we provide include but are not limited to:

  • Any care provided to the patient directly by the team which includes visits by the physician, nurse, home health aide, medical social worker and chaplain.
  • All durable medical equipment that the patient may need that will enhance their quality of life such as a shower bench, wheelchair, oxygen machine and hospital bed.
  • All medications related to the terminal diagnosis that will control/palliate symptoms and relieve pain
